In The Spotlight: Timothy Garrett

Marveling at his wide variety of projects, I once asked Timothy Garrett if he essentially did anything that the word “creative” could be attached to. He’s an overall creative director, graphic designer, video director, concept creator, hand illustrator, screenwriter, after effects animator …and more. What can he artistically not do? He laughed and took in my light-hearted rhetorical question but still answered, “All joking aside, I specialize in creative concept creation and execution with a unique skew of mind.” There will be no marketing myopia with that perspective. This guy means business.

He came onto my radar in early June 2011 shortly after Broadway star Reeve Carney introduced himself to the world on the season finale of American Idol in a performance with Bono and The Edge of U2.  Reeve was worth researching; upon doing so, I discovered his band Carney and their debut music video for the song “Love Me, Chase Me” with concept and direction by none other than Timothy Garrett. It doesn’t take a lifetime of experience to be able to channel your visions and produce them into reality. It takes a strong sense of self, confidence, and hard work. I was surprised to find that the professional behind this beautiful five-minute film was only a couple short years out of California Institute of the Arts. I came to find that he has already racked up a respectable resume, though the idea that this caliber of work with such growing visibility is coming out of a very young man means there is no telling how successful his career can become.

With family roots in New York City, Tim was born and raised on the sunny side in Los Angeles.  He is immersed in the city life surrounded by enormously talented people. He lives and breathes it. I believe that all beings are naturally artists in need of some form of self-expression. To Tim, though, acting on that inspiration seems second nature. A wise man once reminded me that the quality of a man’s work ethic is directly related to his character. It takes the heart of a person to take pride in what they are doing and put drive behind their efforts. Based on this, Tim is all heart.

In the six months that I have been aware of him, he has been endlessly working on project after project. He’s writing a screenplay. He’s conceptually developing more music videos. He’s animating for production companies. The list goes on and on. Most publicly, he debuted a new illustrated series known as “Supers” at the Secret Headquarters in LA. These illustrated pieces were on display for the month of September until sent to their buyers. Now they are available as prints. (http://society6.com/timothygarrett/prints) Then Tim made an announcement that he was taking on the job of Creative Director for Vallure Vodka - the self-proclaimed most luxurious vodka in the world. (http://24karat-vodka.com/home.html) He’s busy with no sign of slowing down. In fact, I think he’s on the verge of quite a wild ride.

Selfishly I wish to see more music videos by Timothy Garrett. As a music fan, I put my confidence in him as an artist to bring the music that I love to life in visual images. He has a way of surprising me, and I am impressed with each surprise. I know this element of revelation will live in the work he creates for the genre of music. Right when I think I have him figured out, he does something different. When I believe I have seen the scope of his versatility, there is something new he reveals. I look forward to the music videos, but I know there are far bigger and better creations that will come out of this young man. The sky is not the limit. I genuinely can’t wait to see what he was born to channel.
